Between its candlelit scriptoria, busy marketplaces, narrow streets, and noisy feasts, the Middle Ages were an exciting time! This week, we will learn German while exploring medieval history, practicing our skills as guild apprentices, dancing to medieval music, making our own natural dyes, and hosting our very own tournament of knights. Throughout the week, we will think about both the difficulties and the joys of the so-called "Dark Ages", and of course reflect on what we can learn from peasants, knights, and herbalists that populated the medieval era.

This week we will be building many things out of many different materials. Legos, paper, craft materials, and more! We’ll explore which shape is the strongest, how gravity works, and other engineering concepts. We also know, what goes up, must come down; destruction of our constructions will be a fun way to wrap up activities.

Making textiles is one of the most ancient and most uniquely human activities, with weaving alone dating back to at least the Neolithic Era. Since then, cultures across the world have invented an incredible variety of techniques to make, decorate, embellish, piece together, and use cloth made out of fibers. Join us as we practice some of these ancient and modern techniques, including weaving, knotting, braiding, sewing, embroidery, and knitting/crochet, and bring home our own textile creations! At the same time, we'll be learning German — and a little about the world-shaping history of textile production.
A $20 additional material fee is included in weekly tuition.
