Course Description:
This course offers a close reading of Die Schachnovelle by Stefan Zweig. Students will explore the novella’s language, narrative structure, and historical context while examining its deeper themes such as psychological pressure, isolation, and intellectual resistance.
Die Schachnovelle tells the story of a mysterious chess match aboard an ocean liner between the world champion and a man whose extraordinary chess ability emerged during psychological imprisonment under the Nazi regime.
Throughout the course, we will analyze both the content and deeper meaning of the text, while also examining the grammar and linguistic structures used in the book to strengthen reading comprehension and understanding of Zweig’s style. Discussions, short analyses, and guided reading will help students engage with the text from both literary and linguistic perspectives.
