Description

Course Description:

This course offers a close reading of Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. Students will explore the novel's language, narrative structure, and philosophical context while examining its central themes, including identity, alienation, individuality, the tension between instinct and reason, and the search for meaning.

Steppenwolf follows Harry Haller, a man who feels divided between his civilized human side and his untamed "wolf" nature. Through a series of encounters that challenge his worldview, the novel explores questions of self-discovery, transformation, and the complexity of human identity.

Throughout the course, we will analyze both the content and deeper meaning of the text while examining the grammar, vocabulary, and stylistic features used in the novel to strengthen reading comprehension and appreciation of Hesse's literary style. Discussions, short analyses, and guided reading will help students engage with the text from both literary and linguistic perspectives.

Course Objectives:

Throughout the course, students will develop strategies for reading authentic literary texts in German while deepening their understanding of Hesse's language and style. They will analyze major themes, characters, and narrative techniques, expand their literary and academic vocabulary, and strengthen their reading comprehension through close textual analysis and discussion. By the end of the course, students will be able to interpret key passages, discuss the novel's philosophical ideas in German, and engage confidently with complex literary texts.
