START 2: A1.2 (online) - Fri. PM

Course Description:

This A1.2 course is the second step in the A1 sequence. Students will continue to practice German pronunciation, expand their knowledge about cases in German as well as prepositions that require the use of specific cases, and they will also learn word order in German and how to use modal verbs. They also start studying past tense forms of haben and sein. Students will continue to learn to express themselves in simple sentences and talk about topics of personal interest such as family, leisure time activities and living arrangements. They will learn to tell time and make appointments. Students will start to express preferences and dislikes. They will be able to show attitudes by adding modal verbs to sentences. They will also learn to talk about the weather.

Course Objectives:

At the end of A1.2, students will be able to offer basic information about themselves, their interests, and hobbies and daily routines and ask others for the same. They will be able to make appointments and plans with others and express their likes or preferences. They will have received an introduction to the sound system in German and talk about and ask for things in their immediate environment.

Textbook:

Schritte International NEU 1+2, Chapters 5 to 10; Kursbuch (textbook), Arbeitsbuch (workbook) bundle - $75

• If you took the previous A1.1 course with us last semester, or in the past 2 years, you will not need to purchase a new set of textbooks. This course will continue in the same book and will cover chapters 5 to 10 (depending on class needs and speed).
• Cost: $75 - The set of textbooks are available for purchase directly from the GAI by adding the textbook option to your cart.
• Shipping: If you live outside of the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area and cannot pick up your books at the GAI, or if you are taking an online class and need them shipped to you, you will need to select the shipping option at checkout as well. A $10.00 shipping & handling fee applies.
• Pickup: The textbooks for this class will be available for pickup (or shipping) one week before the first day of class. 

• ***Please note: The cutoff to order textbooks from the GAI will be March 16, 2025 in order to receive a textbook on time. Book orders placed after March 16th will be available on the first day of class. If you did not order a textbook through the GAI, you will not see a $75 textbook charge in your confirmation email.

Course Dates, Location, & Time:

This is an ONLINE class that meets for 12 weeks on Friday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:00 PM on Zoom. The instructor will send link to participants approximately 72 hours before the start of the first class session. Additionally, the instructor will offer a weekly
"office hour" (30 min) for homework questions and review. The course
instructor will decide on a day/time to offer the 30-minute office hour and
communicate day/time of week with all registered course participants.

Minimum Enrollment:

If there are too few students registered to run a class section, the Director of Language Education will contact the student(s) at least ***72 hours prior to the term’s start date*** to discuss other class options. Please keep an eye out for emails from the GAI.
