START 2: A1.2 (in-person - Mon. PM)

Course Description:

Designed for students with basic knowledge of the German language, this course is step 2 in our START 1-2-3 Series. This course picks up where you left off in the previous A1.1 course at the Germanic-American Institute.

Structurally: This course continues the introduction into the German language. Students will continue to practice German pronunciation. They will expand their knowledge about cases in German as well as prepositions that require the use of specific cases. They will also learn word order in German and how to use modal verbs. They will also start studying past tense forms of haben and sein.

Functionally: Students will continue to learn to express themselves in simple sentences and talk about topics of personal interest such as family, leisure time activities and living arrangements. They will learn to tell time and make appointments. Students will start to express preferences and dislikes. They will be able to show attitudes by adding modal verbs to sentences. They will also learn to talk about the weather.

Objectives:

At the end of A 1.2, students will be able to offer basic information about themselves, their interests, and hobbies and daily routines and ask others for the same. They will be able to make appointments and plans with others and express their likes or preferences. They will have received an introduction to the sound system in German and talk about and ask for things in their immediate environment.

Course Dates, Location, & Time:

This is an in-person class that meets for 12 weeks on Monday evenings from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the GAI (301 Summit Ave., St. Paul, MN). Additionally, the instructor will offer a weekly "office hour" (30 min) for homework questions and review. The course instructor will decide on a day/time to offer the 30-minute office hour and communicate day/time of week with all registered course participants.

Textbooks:

If you recently took the GAI's A1.1 course, you will not need to purchase new books. This course picks up were the A1.1 course left off. However, it is not required to have taken A1.1 at the GAI to participate in this course, as long as you have taken our free placement test and you place in the A1.2 range.

• Order Deadline: Please note that the cutoff to order textbooks from the GAI will be August 29, 2025 in order to receive a textbook on time. Book orders placed after that date cannot be guaranteed to be available or shipped in advance or by the start date, therefore we recommend purchasing the books during your course registration today!
